Ben Ham Images

A full time fine art landscape photographer, Ben Ham works exclusively with a wooden field camera capturing images on black and white sheet film. Driven by a passion for exploring the great outdoors, his subjects range from the Lowcountry of the South Carolina coast to the high altitudes of the Rockies, from the buttes and mesas of the Southwest to the Pacific Coast.

Ben practices a contemplative approach to his art, producing compositions that possess a presence and potency of place that cause a shift in consciousness inviting the viewer to step into the world created through the photographer’s eye. His photographs are rich in detail and strong in craft.

Scott, you never cease to amaze me. This may be one of the best motion graphics pieces I have seen from you. Keep up the great work. Ben’s work is stellar. I have seen his prints first-hand at the Hilton Head gallery; quite breathtaking. Are you familiar with Richard Prince and Peter Lik?

Thanks F. Holland. Yes, Ben’s work is something special. I have been to the Hilton Head Gallery as well and his prints are like nothing I have ever seen before. My favorite is “Eight Foot Tide.” The 8 x 10 camera he uses produces an amazing print. When you stand in the presence of a print that is 6 feet wide you cant help but be blown away. I don’t know much about Richard and Peter but the little I do know gets me excited about how they have turned their passion into great business.

Perfect! Love the style and music. Classy with a modern feel. I just found your site from a ptap RSS feed. AE or Motion?

Thanks SoCal. This project was created in After Effects CS6. The footage of the 8 x 10 camera was filmed with the Canon 5DMK3 and a 24-105L Lens. Audio was recorded with the Tascam DR100MK2 and the AKG shotgun mic. Edited in Premier CS6.

Very nice and polished. How can I subscribe to your site updates? BTW this looks great on Vimeo via Apple TV. I would like to have something similar created to present my photography portfolio. You really have my mind spinning with creativity now!

Thanks Claude. You can subscribe to my RSS feed (upper right of my site). Or you can subscribe to my Vimeo Channel. You are so right about using a cool motion graphics piece to display your Photography. This “Ben Ham” piece is a great example for that. Do you have a website? Call me if you want to discuss it. Peace.

Wow!!! I just looked at Ben’s site. I have lived in SC all of my life and was not aware of him. Amazing work.

Scott, you did such a good job of presenting Ben’s “Classic” work within a modern presentation. I want to see more…

Excellent! Please check out my site and give me your thoughts on a “fresh” face. I would like something like this to be on my homepage. As well as a “teaser.”

As usual you knocked it out of the park! Great look.

Smoking hot work. Love how the pics unfold. This guy is still using a “film” camera – I love it. He has probably figured out that the old/classic is the new modern. Personally I have no need to go back to film. Click and Spray! Then 5 hours in Lightroom sifting through thousands of images (funny). He probably shoots one image and gets what he wants. Have you seen the Canon D800 (46MP). I see that Fuji is getting out of the film business as well. All of this probably works for him – all the way to the bank!

    Works for me!

Scott this is a wonderful piece of work. Keep it up. LMKY! We could really use your help these days… As always the offer still stands.

Lots of great work on your site. Very impressive. As I am planning to create something similar (Ben Ham teaser) for my business (Short-Film Production) I have this question: Why don’t you do something like this for your own business. Such great work for others but nothing specific for yourself. As professional creatives, we rarely tend to use our talents to focus on our own businesses. I would appreciate your thoughts on this.

B.C. I do believe that we(creative professionals) should display our work in a way that helps potential clients align with us. There are lots of ways to do that. Over the course of my 23 years in the business I have made lots of demo reels for myself and the companies I have worked for. Most of the time they tended to be glorified music videos. But yes, as you so note, I currently do not have a “best of” reel. I want potential clients to see a work in its entirety to get a real feel for my style and approach. I am planning something like what Jasmine Star did on her site. It was not a “best of” reel, but a short narrative promo piece on her. God has blessed me with several friends who are DPs that I trust to make me look good(not as easy job). I hope to write the script and get it done before December.

Beautiful. Love Ben’s work. I had the pleasure of reading his book last year and was immediately drawn to his photographs. I love the last line in the clip where he speaks about getting out and enjoying the world and saving a portion of it. Sounds like he shares Ansel’s love of nature. Good company.
